The Surfrider Foundation Treasure Coast Chapter is asking that the Village of Tequesta Commission regulate intentional balloon releases, including sky lanterns.
The release into the atmosphere of large numbers of balloons inflated with lighter-than-air gases poses a danger and nuisance to the environment, particularly to wildlife and marine animals, and sky lanterns have been known to burn entire structures and main wildlife upon landing.
Surfrider's Treasure Coast Chapter is asking for the ban of all intentional balloon releases and sky lantern because these activities not only constitute as littering, but are incredibly harmful to our protected marine wildlife which reside on the shores of this coastal community. They are encouraging residents to seek other alternatives to releasing balloons. Such as planting trees, blowing bubbles and even hosting beach cleanups in memorium of a loved one.
