We've had a super fun and busy summer here on the beautiful coast of Maine. From beach clean ups to awesome new chapter members, and some huge (we're stoked to say they are historic!) wins for our state. The tides are changing for the better; we need you to help us move the needle and spread the stoke!
If you couldn't join us, or are new to the Surfrider Foundation + the Maine Chapter, here's a quick rundown of our chapter's top highlights from Summer 2019.
It might not have technically been summer, but the Plastic Bag Ban is worth celebrating again! This past June, Governor Janet Mills signed the Plastic Bag Ban into law, prohibiting the sale of plastic bags under 4mils in the state of Maine.

Every June, Surfrider Chapters nationwide come together to protect and enjoy our oceans and coastlines. This year, we took to a good ol' fashioned beach clean up, surfing and more! Huge thanks to the volunteers who came to support and join in on the fun. We couldn't have done it without you.
We were stoked to send our Vice Chair, Jenn Mocarski out to Irvine, California to attend the Surfrider Summit along with our rad Northeast Regional Manager, Melissa Gates. The ladies represented our Maine Chapter, met countless other ocean lovers and SF members, and sharpened their ocean activism skills at various talks. Stay tuned for a longer recap of what they learned and how we're planning on implementing those new ideas and inspiration here in Maine!
Our chapter is tackling another plastic pollution problem: straws. As we work hard to drum up support and momentum for what would be another historic victory, this plastic straw ban campaign needs your help to win. Get involved by joining us at a chapter meeting (every first Monday of the month!), like us on Facebook, or email: maine@surfrider.org for more information.
We wrapped up summer with a fun collab at Bissell Brothers Brewing. Avid surfers, ocean lovers, and local favorite, BBB generously supported the Surfrider Maine Chapter this August. They donated $1000 from the profits of their small-batch, limited-edition, Berliner Weisse with watermelon. Stayed tuned for further events, collaborations, and more with the folks at BBB!
We've got a full schedule for fall: events, meeting, clean ups and so much more. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram + join our chapter to get involved. A huge thanks to all of our volunteers—We can't do it with you!
