Beach Cleanups Made Easy by Beach Guardians

Discover how The Surfrider Foundation Maine Chapter is revolutionizing beach cleanups and making it easier for everyone to get involved in protecting our oceans.

The Impact of Beach Pollution

Beach pollution is a growing problem that poses a significant threat to our oceans and marine life. Plastic waste, chemical pollutants, and other debris can contaminate the water, harm marine animals, and damage fragile ecosystems. The accumulation of trash on beaches not only spoils the natural beauty of these environments but also affects the overall health of our planet. It is crucial to address this issue and take action to mitigate the impact of beach pollution.

The Surfrider Foundation Maine Chapter is dedicated to preserving the world's oceans and beaches. With the mission of protecting and enjoying our coastlines, our nonprofit organization actively engages with volunteers and the local community to create lasting change.

Introducing Beach Guardians

Beach Guardians is a community-driven initiative led by The Surfrider Foundation Maine Chapter. It aims to empower individuals to take an active role in protecting their home beach or favorite beach.   The Guardians agree to monthly or quarterly beach clean ups, habitat monitoring and data collection, as well as extreme weather event documentation.

How the Program Works

Beach Guardians all the tools needed for a beach clean up—a bucket, garbage pickers, gloves, a tarp and a t-shirt.  They clean/monitor their home beach monthly/quarterly, picking up trash, taking pictures of habitat changes and noting any differences since their last visit.  When the clean up is done they catalog their trash and send the form, along with photos, to the Surfrider Maine Chapter.  From there, the information is uploaded into the main Surfrider Foundation database.

Benefits of Beach Guardians

Becoming a Beach Guardians comes with numerous benefits. Firstly, you have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in your local community. By actively participating in beach cleanups and habitat assessment, you contribute to the preservation of marine ecosystems and the overall health of our oceans.

The information collected helps to inform conversations that happen on the National level regarding plastic pollution, clean water, ocean protection and beach access.
