Offshore Drilling: What You Need to Know

In the coming days, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is expected to release its proposed five-year plan that could open new sites for offshore oil drilling along the East Coast, West Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and Alaska.

Once the plan is released, the public will have 60 days to comment—an important window to make your voice heard.

Here’s what you should know:

  • New offshore drilling won’t lower gas prices.

  • We don’t need more drilling. The U.S. is already energy independent and a net exporter of oil.

  • The oil industry is sitting on 1,800 unused leases.

  • Renewable energy is growing fast—and it’s now cost-competitive with fossil fuels.

  • Offshore drilling threatens marine life, coastal economies, and communities that depend on clean, healthy oceans.

Fortunately, some leaders in Congress have introduced legislation to permanently ban new offshore drilling, but that alone won’t be enough. It will take all of us—our voices, action, and determination—to protect the ocean we love.

Surfrider, alongside a coalition of conservation organizations, is leading the charge to defend our coasts. But we can’t do it without you. Together, we can keep the pressure on Congress to stand up for our ocean.

If you love our beaches, waves, and wildlife, now’s the time to take action:

  • Sign up for Surfrider Foundation’s Action Alerts to stay informed and sign the current on HERE.

  • Contact your elected officials and urge them to oppose new offshore drilling.

  • Talk to your friends, family, and community about what’s at stake.

The ocean needs all of us. Let’s raise our voices—and keep drilling off our coasts once and for all.
