HAVE A SAY IN HOW THE OCEAN IS USED…PARTICIPATE IN OCEAN PLANNING EFFORTS!  How should New England ocean waters be used, better understood and more effectively managed in the future?  That’s the question the Northeast Regional Ocean Planning Body is grappling with… and they seek YOUR input.  PLEASE JOIN THE REGIONAL OCEAN PLANNING E-LIST TO KEEP UP-TO-DATE ABOUT OCEAN PLANNING IN NEW ENGLAND & WAYS YOU CAN GET INVOLVED!

What is the RPB, anyway…?  The Regional Planning Body is comprised of federal, state and tribal leaders who are working together to implement the National Ocean Policy.  Learn more about ocean planning & why it is so vital for non-consumptive ocean recreation enthusiasts to get involved, by visiting our Northeast Regional Facebook page:  h e r e.

Thanks for considering taking part in this important ocean planning process to be proactive in helping protect our recreational areas & ecological hotspots before they’re threatened!

Thanks for helping clean up with us at OOB!

Surfriders helped clean Old Orchard Beach with us, on Saturday July 20!

We met at the Surfrider Foundation tent at the Walnut Street entrance to Old Orchard Beach.

WHAT:  Beach cleanup!  Cigarette butts are always the most numerous items picked up at OOB.   We picked up over 4,000 butts in just a 1/4 of a mile of the beach. Eeew.  Remember…hang onto your butts if you must smoke…and come out to get involved with Surfrider Maine to help educate people about marine debris and work to keep our ocean, waves & beached clean!

Thanks to all who participated in helping to Sponsor a Special Surfer Autism Surf Session!

Maureen Dow, our local connection to the Autism/Asperger community, Nanci Boutet, owner of Aquaholics Surf Shop AND, most of all, the HUNDREDS of volunteers, sponsor these sessions. They are nearing the 1,000 volunteer mark and can always use more help!

Special Surfer Night is a program that happens every 3rd Tuesday of June, July and August where kids with special needs are taken out surfing.  There are kids on the Autism Spectrum, kids and young adults with Down’s syndrome, a young man with Dubowitz syndrome, you name it. Anyone who feels like the program is a good fit is welcome.  More info here, from the event sponsors.  Surfrider Maine members are encouraged each year to contact Special Surfer Night to offer to volunteer or sponsor some kids!  Thanks again to all who helped in the 2013 season!

International Surfing Day falls upon June 20 every year…in 2013, we had a fabulous

celebration on the 22nd!  Thanks to all

who joined in, and thanks to Blackpoint Surfshop for hosting!

MORE ABOUT ISD:  June 20 marks ISD every year. Not sure what it’s all about…? Here’s a brief history:

In 1778 British sea captain James Cook sailed to Hawaii. The first European to make contact with Hawaiians, Cook was intrigued by the culture and marveled at the native’s ability to ride the crashing waves that broke just offshore:

“I could not help concluding this man had the most supreme pleasure while he was driven so fast and so smoothly by the sea.”

Today that same fascination with riding waves continues to enthrall millions around the globe. The sport of surfing has taken up roots in virtually every country that touches an ocean – and even a few that don’t! Surfing figures prominently on the cultural landscape as well, often popping up in ads and movies.

This is why International Surfing Day was founded; so that surfers and surf enthusiasts from all over the globe have an opportunity to come together in celebration of the great sport of surfing.

Now in its ninth year, ISD has grown to over 200 separate events in over 30 different countries. From paddle-outs to beach cleanups, surf movie nights to mangrove restorations, surfers across the world will be coming together on June 20th 2013 to both celebrate the sport of surfing, and to give something back to the oceans, waves and beaches that give us all so much.

So wherever you are on this big blue ball, we invite you to join in on June 20th each year, as we celebrate International Surfing Day!  More info on ISD here:  http://isd.surfrider.org.
