GREAT NEWS MAINE SURFRIDERS!
ON MONDAY, JUNE 16, THE PORTLAND CITY COUNCIL VOTED 6-3 TO PASS TWO LANDMARK ORDINANCES FOR THE STATE OF MAINE.
The first! A 5-cent fee on paper and plastic carryout bags at retail grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience food stores.
The second! A ban on the sale of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam food packaging at all retail vendors including restaurants and grocery stores. Similar legislation was enacted in Freeport, Maine over 2o years ago and we’re stoked that Portland has adopted similar measures!
Both ordinances will go into effect April 15, 2015, giving us plenty of time to aid in the transition. The passage of both ordinances here in Maine is a major win for us, for our oceans, and for the creatures inhabiting those oceans. Thanks to all who have supported these campaigns and stay tuned for the next RAP challenge!
